The Thrifty Reader is a small used bookstore operating in Barlow's Mill, at 369 West Main Street in Fredonia.  One of very few “bricks and mortar” used bookstores open for business in Chautauqua county, The Thrifty Reader maintains an inventory of several thousand books for sale, with an emphasis on fiction, science-fiction-fantasy, classics of literature, and mystery fiction (other sections are also present, but vary in size by the month).

All paperback books at the Thrifty Reader are sold at half of their original value, and hardcovers are usually sold at 20% of the original value.

The Thrifty Reader also accepts books in trade. When a customer brings in books, they get 25% value in credit for paperbacks, and 10% value in credit for hardcovers. The store maintains customer records, so patrons don't have to spend all their credit at one time.
